What Is The Meaning Of Life?

What Is The Meaning Of Life?

The good news is at the end of this post.  Just keep reading.

Have you ever considered the fact that Life can only have meaning if Someone created you with a purpose.  Accidents don’t have a purpose.  Purpose presupposes that you were created, specifically it presupposes that your Creator wanted you to fulfill the purpose He had for you.

That’s good news.  Someone Created you.  Someone wants you.  You are not an accident.

Isaiah 43:7 speaks of how God created us for His glory.  Just as parents delight in their children, so God wants to delight in you.

In the same way, when you are connected to God, you are fulfilled.  In John 17:3, Jesus alludes to this when He says, “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.”

You exist to know God and be loved by Him.  When that happens, you have joy.  It doesn’t mean that you don’t ever experience trials, it means that no matter what happens, you are loved and supported.

But there is a problem, one you have probably felt.

We have separated ourselves from God by sinning.  We can rationalize about the degree of severity for our wrongdoing, but none of us can say we are perfect.  Romans 3:23 reminds us that everyone has sinned and fallen short of God’s glory.

That sin and the brokenness that comes with it is why we live empty lives.  Without our connection to God, we are left to our human nature.  Galatians 5:19-21 describes what comes out of the life apart from God:

Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
— Galatians 5:19-21

Not very many of us have done all of these things, but most of us have more than one of them. Left to myself, my brokenness will manifest in anger, bitterness, envy, addiction, and lust.

What is worse, these things keep me from eternal life.  2 Thessalonians 1:9 among several other passages reminds us that our sin has eternal consequences, eternal death in Hell.

It Get’s Worse.

We can never be good enough to save ourselves.  Isaiah 64:6 tells us that our righteousness is like filthy rags.  We can never be good enough to “win ourselves back to God.”

The Best Good News In Eternity

The only person Good enough to save us is God, Himself.  He loved us so much that He came to Save us.  John 3:16 says that whoever believes in Him will have everlasting life.

Here’s how it works:

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
— Romans 6:23

The payment for your sin is death.

Jesus died to pay for your sin.

God gives you eternal life, restoring you to relationship with God in Christ.

Here’s how you receive the Free Gift.

..because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
— Romans 10:9-10

Put simply, there is nothing YOU do.  God did it all.

If you want to know God, it is no small thing.  Following Jesus is not like adding a new set of beliefs to your life, it means trading in your old life for a new one.  It means turning your life over to the God who made you.  It is a wonderful thing, but don't assume your life will be "the same but better."  Following Jesus means repenting (turning from) your old life of sin and letting Him have control.

Relinquishing control is the hardest part for most people.  In fact, it is the reason why not many truly follow Jesus.  Plenty of people pretend to, but few are willing to give up control.

If you are unwilling to give up control of your life, then move on.   You can't control Jesus.

But, if you are able to admit that control is an illusion, and that trying to control your life has only led to more brokenness, then Trust Jesus.  It's the best thing you will ever do.

Here's How to Become a Follower of Jesus

  1. Declare Jesus your Lord (Give Him control of your life.)

  2. Believe that He really did die to pay for your sin and really did raise from the dead to give you new life.

Beyond that, abide in Jesus (Follow Him).  Enjoy the relationship you have been restored to.  Commune with God through prayer, fellowship with other believers, and time in the Word of God (Bible).  Also, now is a good time to proclaim your relationship with God through baptism (Matthew 28:19-20.

The best way to do all this is to connect with a church family that will be your family.  We can help with that.
